armani/5th ave

Armani/5th Avenue.
Designed by Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas Architects

Giorgio Armani's lavishly fresh concept store. Forget Milan.
Opened 2.18.09 in New York on none other than 5th Avenue.
The meticulously conceived steel staircase.
Four floors, 43,000 sq feet, encased in glass.
Ranging from Armani jeans, Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani collections.
Underwear, swimwear, fragrances, denim, gowns, suits.
Even $95 cellular phone key chains.
Progressively more & more refined as you escalate to Armani heaven.
Seriously?
Fuck me fa-bu-lous.

"A really exciting challenge – that is how I would describe our new concept store, Armani/5th Avenue in New York. It is a special project requiring a degree of courage, as it brings together in one-space different elements such as Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani side by side with Giorgio Armani. I was determined to send out a clear message of change, interpreting the current trend for mixing genres, juxtaposing items in different price brackets. You could say that this is a provocative move – uniting in the same place and with the same furnishings, without visible boundaries, the various collections that combine to form the entire Armani universe.

This freedom of expression defines for me the spirit of Fifth Avenue: a prestigious shopping destination, of course, but one that is less exclusive in character than comparable addresses, with a democratic mood which I am certain represents the future. I worked on the creation of this store with Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, whose hugely respected architectural practice is known for bringing a precisely judged sense of glamour to clothing stores.

This is the third project we have jointly accomplished, following on from Armani/Chater House in Hong Kong and Armani/Ginza Tower in Tokyo, and significantly all three offer totally distinctive environments, each different from the other, because I contend that identical retail spaces, monolithic and repetitive, belong in the past and cannot match the experience offered by a totally original store which introduces the public to the aesthetic excitement of fine contemporary architecture.“

Best Life
APRIL 2009

"I've never looked at myself and said that I need to be a certain way to be around a certain sort of people. I've always wanted to stay true to myself, and I've managed to do that. People have to accept that. I collect art, and I drink wine...things that I like that I had never been exposed to. But I never said, 'I'm going to buy art to impress this crowd.' That's just ridiculous to me. I don't live my life like that, because how could you be happy with yourself?" -Jay-Z

so fly

My first flight since I was 12,
of course I chose to sit next to the window...

......But I also chose to be safe.
Emergency exits were one row in front of me.
To Vegas for a night, January 2009

Recap: 3 stellas waiting to board, amazing view, comfortably peaceful, traveling solo. Had the row to myself, radiating this silly excitement to fly 1.5 hrs to a neigboring state. Call me crazy, but it was probably the best part of the trip. Minus the 45 minutes later where I realized I had to urinate but couldn't because the seat belt light turned on.. It was definitely the better moments of the weekend.. and I hadn't even met up with my friends yet. Hmm.

influential

Upon entrance (in continuation to my previous post "entrance" refers to Barnes & Noble), I was greeted by members of the Boy Scouts of America holding a fundraiser. In observation.. It's an ironic precedent: The boys are holding fundraisers and interacting among people who's general desire is to read or stimulate their minds while the Girl Scouts are selling cookies outside of Grocery Markets to those who are purchasing things out of necessity. More comparisons could be made and I could bring out my "Troop 799" sash with it's, ha ha, sewn on patches we were encouraged to put on ourselves... but I won't. (Probably why I also don't know how to sew. Figures..)

Judging by the people I've surrounded myself with lately and more than likely indefinitely.. A refined man's intellect is much deeper than a woman's (that I've seemed to meet in my lifetime, with exceptions of course). The desire to simply "know" never ends. Their passion for worldly knowledge intertwined with.. well the finer things in life.. surpasses any that I have observed, possibly including myself. This is what I would consider top percentile, regardless of sex. And furthermore, their ability to find people of similar intelligence without lacking ahem, social skills.. is also amazing. But the same type of people attract the similar, and I'm lucky to have found such a niche.

I'm a big fan of people watching, you see, from body language to tone, to outfits and comfortability level, as is many other people. In meeting friends of friends, colleagues etc., I observe the same. I don't JUDGE overtly.. but I do observe. I remember sitting at an In & Out window in my early teens making up stories about the muted people who walked by.. (Btw, I'm not much bothered by people either, so even if my staring caused discomfort, I'd flash a smile and continue on with my story.. even if no one was listening & it was me conversing with myself in my head). But here I go on off tangents as usual... Anyway..

Given a situation this is probably why I choose more to surround myself with properly [emotionally] detached, exceptionally entertaining (forgive the alliteration) people than those who feel the need to dwell and elaborate situation by situation, regardless of whether or not it directly involves them. In times where the latter occurs, it is only with a few people that I can, willingly tolerate such. Because primarily of their "big hearts." Which is why the few that I've got, I hold the utmost respect and love for. For their relentless and incomparable talent, whether specific or not.. And for their important effect in my life :) And, I'm sure the response would be a meaningless "Duh" had they heard/read this. Or, comment to themselves. Haha!

When you find people who stimulate your mind in such a sense.. you find yourself trying to be a better person, all around. They are very influential. Thanks guys. Hahaha.

To end..
I promise the next couple of entries will be a lot more uplifting than satirical.

The Persistence of Memory (1931)
Salvador Dali

Not too long ago I dropped into my local bookstore, (in avoidance of stating that I was actually at the midterms hotspot/suburbian chain Barnes & Noble) browsing around at whatever grabbed my attention. Walking by the Best Sellers, 10% off table, a table dedicated to Jesus of Nazareth in response to the times (i.e., Easter), I found a table of books ranging from topics about the greatest scientists of all time, philosophers, artwork from the ages, etc. Needless to say, I spent most of my THREE hours at this table, depressingly ending at Princeton review books on the GREs.

Back to the table, as I refreshed my memory on history and art, I came across a book on Surrealism. Flipping through the pages, admiring the imagery.. the above piece struck my fancy. Originally titled "La Persistencia de la Memoria," Spanish for "The Persistence of Memory," the painting itself can be root to many interpretations, all of which I won't get into. Three words for thought: Ants, Time, Change.

Out of curiosity, I researched the artist via the World Wide Web & realized that his entire being interested me as well. On Dali:

"Dali would often make up ridiculous explanations for his paintings to purposely mislead people... By doing this Dali not only opened the doors for discussion of multiple interpretations of his art, but also made criticizing his work nearly impossible for people he thought who possessed lesser intellect than that of himself." Whatta genius.

Is it odd that this comment reminds me of someone I know? Ah..

MAC Cosmetics x Hello Kitty from Ykone on Vimeo.
Mac Cosmetics meets Hello Kitty

I personally favored bad ass Badtz Maru and cute little Pochacco.. But everyone seems to love Hello Kitty that the little kitten, however many years later.. now has her own cake-up line. It's a great line, nonetheless.. Had herself a huge event in the MACup industry (so I hear). This was the video set to inspire the MACup artists during the line's launch. Seems similar to an acid trip to me.. but people like acid. And Hello Kitty. So how 'bout a little Hello Kitty on acid?

I will celebrate by watching this video and dancing in my Hello Kitty boy shorts, while trying to do magic on my face such as those talented artists in all black with their brush belts attached, oh so fashionably, to their hips.

And please, don't let my childhood hatred towards Hello Kitty negate the beauty of the makeup applied to the girls faces. Granted, the creepy set of it all does it on it's own.. but I digress.

Enjoy.

"Somewhere Out There"
from the Motion Picture An American Tail.

I think I attempted to download the adult version of the song when Napster was prominent in the 90s and pirating music was not as.. hot. I heard this. Now, youtube made my dreams come true. This always seems to brighten my day. Especially from the middle of nowhere. Oddly enough it depresses others.. How like me.

For lack of better name:
"Ballet Heels"

Christian Louboutin's capability to embody the beauty of the Russian Pointe and associate it with the Red Carpet's matching footwear. It is ballet's demure and grace intertwined with the ostentatiousness of such a high heel and [his] signature red sole. Mistaking this red sole is entirely impossible. Wearing them for leisure, I'd assume is as well.. As said to Style.com by the desginer himself, "They’re only made for lying on your back." Sexy.

Regardless, I find it beautiful

For those on the other end. For the inarticulate. And for all the boys and girls who will comment on the the artist's ability to put into words what, in retrospect, they couldn't. For the natural tendency for females to negotiate and the natural male tendency to be frank.

Here's to you.
